Welcome to Middle of Somewhere!

What we do

Our organization does just one thing: organize vacations in the wilderness. Since our inception in 1992, we have completed over 20 successful wilderness treks, taking us to outdoor destinations in 7 states and provinces in the United States and Canada. Up to this point, our trips have been either backpacking/hiking or canoeing adventures, usually lasting about a week.

Our trips range in difficulty from easy to highly strenuous, and we recommend that anyone attending one of these trips be in at least moderately good physical and mental condition. We're campers, not Mountain Dew(tm)-guzzling shaven-head extreme sports enthusiasts. To see what some of our previous trips have been like, see our Diaries and Images page.

Not only are we not-for-profit, we also have no employees. The five people who represent M.O.S. are called MOS Advisors. These individuals, when attending one of our trips, pay the same amount for the privilege of participating as everyone else on the trip. We are not a guide service, and the Advisors are only different from other participants in that they voluntarily provide advice and leadership based on experience in order to make the trips go more smoothly. For more detailed information on our legal and business standing, see our Business Statement page.

Because we are truly a share-the-cost, share-the-responsibility organization, we are able to put together trips at very reasonable costs. These week-long adventures generally cost about $200 per person plus transportation (plane, car, etc.), including food, shelter, group equipment needs and permits (prices subject to change. Duh.). To see what plans we have for the next few trips, see our Newsletter and Upcoming Trips pages.
