Equipment Fund

In 1998 we instituted a new policy at MOS, wherein everyone who goes out on a trip (including the Advisors) pays an extra $50.00 USD above cost for said trip. This money goes into the "Equipment Fund". The impetus for this was the fact that the Advisors had been volunteering their personal equipment, and it was becoming worn, damaged or destroyed. New equipment was needed, but it was thought that to be fair, everyone who took advantage of this equipment should pay in.

The money is held in an electronic account accessible only by members of the Board. That account is used for three things: purchase and replacement of equipment for sole use on our trips, rent and licensure associated with our website, and as a temporary depository for trip-specific funds. Our website costs us $20 per month for server space, plus an annual fee for the domain name that runs about $35. To help offset these costs, we have established affiliate relationships with Amazon, Moosejaw and REI. For every purchase made on their sites, where the buyer has clicked through via links on our site, we get a small percentage bonus (ranging from 2.5% to 8%). This money goes into the Fund.

Below you will find a brief analysis of the Equipment Fund at present. It shows how much is in it, and what deposits and withdrawals have occurred since its inception.
